A group of local preservationists are upset about the impending demolition of a group of downtown Gainesville buildings and what would be built afterward.

Organizers of the 2025 World Masters Athletics Indoor Championships, which concluded Sunday afternoon, are calling the event a resounding success for Alachua County and the U.S. This was the first time in the event’s 20-plus year history that it was held in the United States.

The Gainesville Community Reinvestment Area was tasked with redeveloping Heartwood neighborhood, formerly the location of the Kennedy Homes apartment complex, in 2008.

On Tuesday morning, Winzoir Van Durr pleaded no contest to two charges related to a 2023 shooting that occurred shortly before he was nominated for an Alachua County advisory board post.
