With five returning seniors, the Gainesville High School Hurricanes basketball team will be all about proving to everyone that last year’s winning 18-12 season was no fluke.

The Alachua County School board unanimously agreed to hire Kamela Patton as interim school superintendent at a special meeting on Monday, Nov. 4, while it continues to search for a permanent replacement for outgoing superintendent Shane Andrew.

The School Board of Alachua County postponed its selection of an interim superintendent of schools at a special meeting on Monday and scheduled another meeting for Nov. 4 to continue discussing candidates. The board seeks to replace former Superintendent Shane Andrew, whose contract the board terminated on Oct. 15 after a 3-to-2 vote.

As Election Day looms, students have begun to take notice and participate in the voting process. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about half of college students voted in 2020, an increase of about 11% from 2016.
