The Road Rangers program, which was implemented in Gainesville in April, has already seen a decrease in road delays on Interstate 75, according to Troy Roberts, spokesperson for the Florida Department of Transportation.
The program should help to alleviate traffic concerns for the upcoming holiday weekend. Roberts expects this Memorial Day to be the busiest in terms of traffic since 2005.
Road Rangers was started 20 years ago and offers free roadside assistance. Motorists can call to receive help with things like changing a tire, running out of gas or getting to the next exit safely.
The program currently only services the portion of I-75 from Micanopy to Alachua, but there are plans to expand to the Florida-Georgia state line.
Drivers can call *347 to receive help between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily.
