A 26-year-old man was arrested Sunday after police believe he tried to look into a woman’s apartment window and then grabbed one of the responding officers by the throat.
Akeem Johnson was charged with two felonies — battery of an officer and resisting an officer with violence — and two misdemeanors — loitering or prowling, and resisting an officer without violence, according to Alachua County jail records.
Police received a call about 10:15 p.m. Sunday from a resident of LUX Apartments at 1015 NW 21st Ave. in Gainesville, said Ben Tobias, a Gainesville police spokesman. The caller said someone was possibly trying to look into her window.
Responding officers spotted Johnson a short distance away, Tobias said. He was hostile toward them and couldn’t explain why he was in the complex.
Johnson then ran away from the officers but was caught once again, Tobias said.
Johnson resisted arrest and grabbed one officer by the throat during the struggle, Tobias said. He was eventually detained but still continued to struggle with the officers.
Johnson has been previously arrested at the complex for loitering and has past arrests for stalking and sexual battery, Tobias said.
Johnson received minor injuries during the struggle and was evaluated by medical personnel prior to being taken to jail. He remained there Monday afternoon on a $30,000 bond.
