A correctional officer at Columbia Correctional Institution in Lake City was stabbed by an inmate Monday morning.
The officer was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital, and his injuries were deemed non-life threatening, according to a news release from the Florida Department of Corrections. The officer was expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday.
Two other officers were injured when they responded to the incident, and they received treatment at a local medical facility.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has begun a criminal investigation.
Further specifics about the incident were unavailable as of Tuesday evening.
Department of Corrections Secretary Julie Jones said the agency will offer “complete investigative support” to the FDLE.
“Staff and inmate safety are the highest priorities of our department,” Jones said in the release. “I applaud the quick and decisive actions taken by the correctional officers responding to this incident, who were able to arrive and assist the victim within moments of the assault taking place.”
