Fatal accident closes Waldo-University intersection

A fatal car accident closed the intersection of Northeast Waldo Road and East University Avenue for several hours Monday morning.

A semitruck and a car collided around 5:30 a.m., said Ben Tobias, Gainesville Police Department spokesman. The driver of the car, Tyler Clayton Gaultney, 31, died at the scene.

Gaultney was driving a Ford Taurus west on East University Avenue when he ran a red light and drove directly into the semitruck, Tobias said. The driver's side of the Taurus collided with the front of the semitruck.

Gaultney, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the car. The driver of the semitruck, Larry Windle, 68, did not appear injured but went to the hospital as a precaution, Tobias said.

The intersection reopened at around 9:30 a.m.
