The College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida has chosen a new dean.

Hub Brown will replace current Dean Diane McFarlin, who has served in the role for eight years and will retire at the end of the year.

Brown currently serves as an associate dean and associate professor at Syracuse University in the Newhouse School of Public Communications, where he has been a faculty member since 1996. Brown also brings more than 15 years of work in the journalism and communications industry, reporting, producing and anchoring.

He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and began working at Syracuse in 1996. While at Syracuse, Brown taught broadcast reporting, newscast production and performance, mass media ethics and media and diversity.

During his career in academia he aided department chairs and helped promote diversity in curriculum, faculty hiring, student recruitment and more.

Brown is a member of the Hearst Journalism Awards Steering committee, has taken part in accreditation site visits for journalism and communications programs across the country and is a member of both the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

Brown will begin his role as dean of the college on July 1, 2021.
