Florida retailers anticipate big holiday sales

Florida retailers are expected to enjoy a busy holiday season this year.

Retail sales in Florida hit a record high last holiday season and should set a new record this year, said John Fleming, director of communications for the Florida Retail Federation.

Holiday sales are booming because consumer confidence has increased, and Floridians are willing to buy gifts for their families and friends. Fleming said consumers feel comfortable making big purchases that can take time to pay off, such as cars and home appliances.

"It looks like these items are selling better this year," he said.

About 42,000 retail jobs will be opened for the holiday season. One in four jobs in Florida are related to retail, Fleming said.
