The University of Florida Police Department confirmed a man who was wanted for recording video of female students in their dorm bathrooms has been arrested.
Deontre Mason, 25, was arrested in Marion, Illinois, on nine charges of video voyeurism brought by UFPD and extradited back to Gainesville on Tuesday.
According to the complaint, Mason is suspected of committing similar acts at the University of Central Florida. He was arrested in December 2021 on the same charge of video voyeurism for incidents on the UCF campus.
Last December UFPD issued an alert to the campus community that a man was suspected of using a cell phone to record multiple young women without their knowledge in the Murphree and Library West areas of the university. Then in February of this year, campus police identified Mason as the man they were looking for and issued a public bulletin with Mason's photo and a description of a car he was believed to be driving.
He is currently being held in the Alachua County Jail on a $900,000 bond. Court records indicate Mason is not allowed to unsupervised contact with minors under the age of 18 years and no internet access.
He has chosen representation by a private counsel—referred to in court documents as “’Fritz’ from Orlando.”
His next court date is scheduled for July 7, 2022 at 9 a.m.
In a statement, UFPD thanked the UF community for its assistance in the investigation.
