Two injured when car hits tree

A car that slammed into a tree Sunday night left two people hospitalized at Shands at the University of Florida.

The crash, in the 200 block of NW 13th St., occurred shortly before 10 p.m. Sunday. The car was nearly sliced in half by its collision with the tree, splitting from the front of the car to the dashboard.

The Gainesville Fire Rescue Department said it was a high-speed crash. Crews used the jaws of life to remove the two people inside the car.

The conditions of the two people taken to Shands were unknown Monday morning.

It was also not clear if any charges will be filed or if the two were wearing seat belts.
