Graduate Assistants Protesting UF Administration For Timely Pay

The University of Florida admitted Monday to not paying 60 to 80 graduate students on time for the first two weeks of the fall semester.

UF attributed the late paychecks to the large influx of new employees.

UF spokeswoman Janine Sikes said the university will send emergency checks out to graduate students by the end of the week for those who still haven't been paid. She also said UF appreciates the work of its graduate students.

Graduate Assistants United held a news conference in front of Tigert Hall Monday to inform the administration of its concerns.

A press release from the the union said it discovered the payments would be late on Aug. 30. The union then notified UF authorities on Sept. 2.  The next day, UF assured the union that efforts had been made to fix the problem by Friday.

But the group of GA's has still not been paid.

On Monday morning, UF responded to the complaints and said it would be remedying the situation by week's end.

UF reinforced its support of graduate assistants, noting they had recently received a 4.4 percent raise -- higher than the raise given to UF faculty.

Graduate Assistants United stated assistants had problems getting paid in the past and the union had resorted to occupying Tigert Hall in order for students to be paid.
