HUDSON, Fla. — A 19-year-old college softball player is dead after being struck by a car that went onto a sidewalk north of Tampa.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the crash happened Monday night after a car driven by 22-year-old Scott Thomas Yutzy Jr. went out of control and hit Brooke Ashlee Gonzalez.

Gonzalez was a sophomore at Pasco-Hernando State College.

Coach Tom Ryan tells the Tampa Tribune he was in the process of gathering the team together Tuesday morning to talk about their teammate's death.

Troopers say Yutzy sustained minor injuries. Charges are pending an investigation.

Gonzalez was an All-State softball player at North Marion High School near Ocala. Ryan says he offered her a scholarship after a private tryout for the college.
