Firefighters in Crystal River extinguished a fire at a rural home Tuesday and rescued 15 chickens, six dogs, six rabbits, two goats and a ferret. No one was hurt.

Citrus County Fire Rescue said neighbors reported the fire and said animals inside were trapped. Firefighters from five area departments arrived to help. Two great danes pulled from the burning home needed life-saving CPR.

All the animals appeared to be in stable condition and were being monitored, officials said.

For over two hours, firefighters labored to put out the fire in the home and a small brush fire nearby. Many of the animals were found in cages on the porch of the burning home, officials said. The home was destroyed by the fire.

The home’s resident told officials he had been burning debris and left the property when the fire spread. The fire department said leaving a fire unattended was dangerous and recommended putting out fires with a hose or shovel.
