Homicide suspect found in Alabama; victim identified

Updated Oct. 29., 3:10 p.m.: Gainesville Police have identified the victim of Friday's stabbing as Robert Dockins, 60, of Gainesville.

The suspect, Clifton Baxter, 33, is in Dothan, Ala. on $500,000 bond.

Ben Tobias, spokesman for GPD, said Baxter makes trips between Orlando and Dothan, Ala., for family purposes and that Baxter and Dockins were acquaintances.

Tobias said police believe the stabbing resulted from a disagreement over money.

Original story: The man authorities believe is responsible for the death of a man found on West University Avenue is now in custody, according to Gainesville police.

Authorities said Clifton Baxter, 33, was found in Dothan, Ala. Investigators used video pictures from cameras in the area where the crime occurred to identify Baxter. Charges have not been released, but Clifton is being held on a $500,000 bond.

The man authorities say Baxter hurt was found Friday morning and later died at Shands at UF. Police have not released the name of the dead man.
