Free health fair offers medical services to Gainesville community

The nonprofit Children Beyond Our Borders partnered with Equal Access Clinic to organize a free health fair event in Gainesville. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19 at Parkview Baptist Church from 8 a.m. to noon.

Some of the services that will be provided are exams to detect cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure, flu shots, pediatric medicine and women’s health.

Sammantha Rials is the co-operations director for Children Beyond Our Borders. She said the event is open to everyone, but their organization is specifically designed to help children in poverty and the Hispanic community. Volunteers at the event will speak both English and Spanish.

“The main goal is to give people the opportunity to come in and have health care if they might not have access to it,” she said.

Children Beyond Our Borders was founded by four Colombian students at the University of Florida in 2003. They started doing free health fair events quarterly in 2016.

Rials said the events are a way to help people learn about their health.

“We know that sometimes in certain communities, there is not the same access to education about health care. So we want to push that as much as possible, and give them the chance to come in and get their health care and feel comfortable.”
