University of Florida accepts 12,000 new students

About 27,000 high school seniors found out if they would become part of the Gator Nation Friday evening.

UF spokeswoman Janine Sikes said the applicants for the class of 2017 were extremely competitive, and more students have been accepted than in previous years.

UF will admit more than 12,000 students, Sikes said, to make up a freshman class of about 6,400. The students will begin classes in either the summer B 2013, fall 2013 or spring 2014 semesters.

About 500 students will be admitted to the Innovation Academyfor the 2014 spring term.

Emily Keehn, a high school student, toured housing at UF today and was excited to hear about the decision.

"I keep faltering between pure excitement and nervousness, because it's always such a gamble whether or not you're going to get in," she said.

About 200 UF decisions were accidentally leaked Wednesday afternoon.
