The NBA season may be over, but many atheltes are trying to stay busy. One former Florida Gator basketball player and current Denver Nugget uses this time to host his third annual Corey Brewer Back-to-Back Youth Basketball Camp in Gainesville. The camp started Monday and Brewer says it's gone well so far.
Brewer's camp is much more than a time to give back to the children of Gainesville, the camp benefits Shands at UF and his "Fight Diabetes Fund" at the UF Diabetes Center of Excellence. Brewer says the camp is special to him since his father passed away this past year from the disease and his mother is currently fighting it.
In past years, Brewer has been accompanied by former Gator greats and other NBA players such a Al Horford and Joakim Noah. They did not make it this year but Brewer says they know how much the camp means to him.
In it's third year, Brewer says he did not expect it to grow like it has.
The camp brings in boys and girls from ages 7 to 17 to take part, and Brewer says the campers have enjoyed themselves.
Along with the benefits the camp gives to diabetes research, Brewer says getting a chance to be around the kids involved is very special to him.
