Update 4:54 p.m.: Gainesville Police have posted the following release.

The Gainesville Police department is currently investigating a shooting by an officer after a car chase, police said. The man is now being treated at Shands at UF.

GPD spokesman Ben Tobias said GPD officers responded to a disturbance report. When police arrived, an individual got into a vehicle and left the scene, nearly striking an officer, Tobias said.

Officers followed the vehicle to the 400 block of SE 73rd Terrace when the vehicle crashed. Tobias said shots were fired at the suspect's vehicle, and gunfire struck the suspect.

The suspect was transported to Shands and no officers were injured, Tobias said.
