"When the Eastside High School Rams football team takes the field Friday night for their game against the Bradford High School Tornadoes, they will be playing for more than just another win in the standings. Friday’s game will begin a weekend of events that players, coaches and classmates will not soon forget. • WUFT News: Authorities: Plane crashes near Waldo, pilot survives. "A small aerobatic plane with only the pilot aboard crashed in a flooded ditch northeast of Gainesville Regional Airport early Thursday and flipped, authorities and witnesses said. The pilot survived and was being checked at a nearby hospital. The 53-year-old pilot, who was not initially identified, was pulled from the wreckage by a farm worker about 8 a.m. Thursday, said Debra Yarborough, the office manager for Straughn Farms."

• News Service of Florida: UF supercomputer helps tackle daunting problems. "The computer, known as HiPerGator, went live in early 2021 and is touted by higher-education officials as the 22nd-fastest supercomputer in the world. David Norton, vice president for research at UF, detailed how HiPerGator can be used to mitigate citrus greening, a disease that has ravaged Florida’s important citrus industry."

• Florida Storms: Weather events caused most major power outages in the past two decades. "A new report finds that 83% of major power outages between 2000 and 2021 were attributed to extreme weather. The analysis authored by Climate Central finds that Florida had the tenth highest number of outages in the nation. The analysis uses data gathered from utility companies around the country and defines a major power outage as one impacting more than 50,000 customers."

Ron DeSantis on Thursday defended Florida’s participation in a pair of flights carrying about 50 migrants, including children, that landed Wednesday at Martha’s Vineyard Airport."

"Congressional candidate Scotty Moore filed a complaint with the state against a news station that turned him away from a debate. Moore filed the complaint against WESH 2 Orlando with the Attorney General’s Office, asserting the news station violated a law forbidding vaccine passports when it said Moore could not participate in a debate hosted by the station because he has not been vaccinated against COVID-19."

• Palm Beach Post ($): Tropical Storm Fiona moving toward Puerto Rico with 50 mph winds. Strengthening expected. "After flirting with 60 mph winds Thursday night, Tropical Storm Fiona's maximum sustained winds backed down to 50 mph early Friday morning. Fiona is expected to strengthen, with winds reaching 70 mph by Monday."

• News Service of Florida: The Biden administration approves funding to boost Florida's vehicle charging stations. "The White House on Wednesday approved plans that will make available roughly $71.5 million for electric-vehicle charging stations in Florida during this fiscal year and next year."

• WUSF: Freshwater discharges from Lake Okeechobee feed red tide algae blooms in the Gulf, study concludes. "By analyzing 9 years of data, Florida researchers recently proved that toxic algae blooms are exacerbated by nutrient-rich freshwater releases. The results confirm what scientists, activists, fisherman and others have observed anecdotally for years."

• Associated Press: Veteran NY judge named as arbiter in Trump Mar-A-Lago probe. "A federal judge on Thursday appointed a veteran New York jurist to serve as an independent arbiter in the criminal investigation into the presence of classified documents at former President Donald Trump’s Florida home, and refused to permit the Justice Department to resume its use of the highly sensitive records seized in an FBI search last month."
