Gainesville's Thornebrook Gallery is scheduled to release an interactive app for smartphones and tablets Oct. 31.
The gallery, which features paintings, jewelry, sculptures and blown glass, already creates a quarterly magazine called The Art of Life, but now it is hoping to reach out to a digital audience.
"The magazine is wonderful, but we can only come out with it quarterly, and so it's a little static," said David Arrighi, the gallery's art director. "Smartphones and pads and tablets are just wonderfully visual media, and everything we do is about visual."
Arrighi will use the app as a way to showcase artwork outside of its walls. The magazine gives people a glimpse of the art inside Thornebrook, as well as articles about local artists, local food and recipes. The app, too, will feature more than just art.
"It's going to be a lifestyle publication," he said. "It's the art of life."
With the new app, people could be looking at works of art from anywhere in the world -- or they could learn about local events.
Arrighi said he thinks artists will be drawn to showcase their work in the new app because it can reach out to more people than a magazine.
"There are a lot of people who really don't know what they're missing by not seeing art, by not experiencing art on a regular basis," he said. "I think we can reach them this way, where we might not be able to get to them through print media."
Although he has not seen the final product, Arrighi said he is excited to see what is to come.
