Gainesville Wins National Award for Art Mural Project

Above: The first mural panel featured was painted by Lauren Donnellan and Mimi Stocker and the second was painted by Robert Ponzio and Oak Hall students.

Gainesville in December completed a social justice art mural project. Out of 37 applications, 12 artists were chosen for the project. The two-sided art panels were posted up in five different parks throughout the city.

“It really becomes a platform for conversation… a vehicle for people to discuss this important issue. Out of conversation comes growth,” said cultural affairs manager Russell Etling.

After applying for the National League of Cities' competition for cities in the 50,000-200,000 population category, Gainesville received the second place award in March.

You can experience the art at one of the five parks or on the 352walls Facebook page.
