Mickey MacKie, an assistant professor in the University of Florida's Department of Geological Sciences, uses machine learning and artificial intelligence to analyze data about glaciers and ice sheets to make predictions and interpretations at one UF's newest labs.
MacKie said she is still able to study it in Florida and that the state is an important region for her field.
Technology such as machine learning is enabling research in these areas that are difficult to study with traditional means.
After coming to UF in summer 2021, she opened the Gator Glaciology Lab and said she hopes its research can be beneficial to others.
Rising sea levels from glacial masses has large uncertainty and implications both globally and locally.
The lab's next projects are to create open-source software to make improved ice sheet maps, create maps of the surfaces under glaciers in Greenland and field research.
