Aldi Food Market received approval in 2015 from the City of Gainesville to build two stores.
When those stores might open is still unknown.
The low-price grocer received approval to begin construction at Northwest 13th Street and 39th Avenue, in addition to a space in Butler North, an expansion to Butler Plaza.
Construction at the Butler North location could begin in the next few weeks, and Cory Presnick, vice president of finance at Butler Enterprises, Inc., said that location could open in fall 2016.
“We’re excited to bring Aldi to Southwest Gainesville because it brings another choice to the community,” he said.
Aldi in North Butler plaza is expected to be about 17,000 square feet. It will be located just north of Lowe’s between pod A and B of the expansion. The discount grocery store will share a parking lot with Lowe’s. Here's the site as of today:
WUFT News sought more information on both projects from Aldi representatives, the city building inspector, and Aldi's site contractors, none of whom returned phone calls and emails.
Another grocery store that plans to offer lower prices, 365 By Whole Foods Market, is expected to join Butler North, Presnick said.
Construction on the 365 store will begin this spring, according to a Butler Town Center press release.
