Tropical Storm Ian

WUFT is providing this weekend edition of The Point as a resource for the latest information about Tropical Storm Ian, as Florida currently sits within the cone of uncertainty.

• Florida Storms: Tropical Storm Ian threatens Florida, but uncertainty persists. "Fluctuations in track and intensity guidance have already occurred and will continue over the next several days. Details, such as potential landfall location, timing of impacts, and intensity of impacts will not become more clear until early next week."

• Mainstreet Daily News: Alachua, Levy counties prep for Tropical Storm Ian. "In a Saturday press release, Alachua County noted the range of possibilities and said 'preparedness is a must.' 'Take the weekend to make sure you and your family have taken all necessary preparedness steps so that if this storm decides to make its way to Alachua County, you will be ready,' the release said. 'Doing things like trimming tree branches, securing lawn furniture, storing toys, tools, and grills, cleaning gutters, and removing obstructions around windows can help prepare your home for winds and heavy rainfall.'"

• WGCU-Fort Myers: What and how to prepare before a hurricane or major storm. "Emergency management officials suggest preparing a gallon of water per person, per day, at least three days of non-perishable food, battery-powered radios, first aid kits, medications, copies of important papers, cell phone chargers and extra cash."

• Associated Press: Florida monitors a growing Tropical Storm Ian in Caribbean. "Ian was forecast to become a hurricane Sunday and a major storm as soon as late Monday. Ian had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph) Saturday night as it swirled about 395 miles (630 kilometers) southeast of Grand Cayman, in the Cayman Islands."

• Bradenton Herald: How bad would a Category 3 hurricane be in Florida? Here’s what a major storm can do. "The possible Category 3 storm could bring “devastating damage,” according to the National Hurricane Center. Here are some of the threats that the hurricane could pose in Florida."

• News4Jax: 2 factors make trees dangerous in major storm. Here’s what to look for, Jacksonville-area expert says. "Justin Hartman is the owner of Canary Tree Service in Fruit Cove. He says when it comes to preventing trees and debris from falling, the first thing to do is find out of the tree is dead."
