Sweetwater Wetland Park Works To Improve Wheelchair Access

Sweetwater Wetland Park recently improved its wheelchair access, but park staff said there is more work to be done.

The Gainesville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department received complaints about the difficulty for ADA patrons to move over the park's gravel pathways. They've made efforts to level the ground, but staff think it is still difficult to move over the ground in a wheelchair.

“So what we’ve done is, here in the last week or so, we put some additional recycle concrete material down, hoping that will continue to stabilize the area," said Chip Skinner, Gainesville Public Works Marketing and Communications supervisor. "If that doesn’t work then we're going to look at different options.”

Officials plan to meet to discuss further plans for the trail, including possibly paving it.
