Gainesville children will soon have new industrial-themed playground and park where they can play while they learn about the local environment and history. Depot Park, which features a 50-foot customized train playground with a 14-foot-tall smokestack, is expected to attract adventure-seeking kids from more than just the Gainesville area. The park has a soft opening Aug. 1 and a grand opening Aug. 20.

The Alachua County Board of County Commissioners approved the Gainesville Regional Transit System's proposed holiday and weekend service changes at a BOCC Special Budget Meeting Tuesday. The schedule enhancements will provide greater service to those who use public transit on weekends and holidays. Alachua County commissioners voted 5-0 for the holiday transportation additions and 4-1 for the weekend transportation additions. The changes take effect Aug. 15 in time for the start of the fall semester.

Bus passes for homeless have been changed from a year long pass to monthly passes. People were using GRACE Marketplace services from 30 to 60 days. Some of the year long passes were being sold on Craigslist and other websites by homeless people.
