The start of a new school year is just around the corner, and the tax-free week on buying school supplies in Florida ends on Sunday. Here is what parents and students should know to be prepared for each county in north central Florida:

Alachua County

Bradford County


  • Bradford County schools open for students on Aug. 10.
  • The Bradford County 2023-24 school year calendar.
  • The new Bradford Elementary is set to be open by Oct. 1. 

Citrus County


  • The first day of school for Citrus County students is Aug. 10.
  • The Citrus County 2023-24 school year calendar.

Columbia County

Dixie County


  • The first day of school for Dixie County students is Aug. 10, with an early release also scheduled for that day.
  • The Dixie County 2023-24 school year calendar.

Gilchrist County


  • Gilchrist County is opening its school doors to students on Aug. 10.
  • The Gilchrist County 2023-24 school year calendar.

Hernando County


  • The first day of school for Hernando County is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 14.
