Widespread and potentially dense fog is expected to create dangerously low visibility along Interstate 75 and Interstate 10 corridors in the Suwannee Valley Tuesday, according to a special weather statement released by the National Weather Service in Jacksonville.
Various prescribed fires in the area resulted in the closure of an 11-mile stretch of Interstate 75 Tuesday morning. As fog moves further north and eastward towards sunrise on Wednesday, it is likely to mix with the smoke from the fires, particularly in the Suwannee Valley and near the Osceola National forest along Interstate 10.
Visibility may drop below one quarter mile, resulting in dangerous driving conditions during the morning commute on Wednesday.
In 2012, similar conditions resulted in a deadly pile-up that left eleven people dead.
The Florida Highway Patrol advises drivers to allow extra time to get to their destination, reduce their speed, reduce distractions, while driving and ensure they are using their headlamps.
