City commission meeting addresses GNV sidewalks regarding walkability and accessibility

The city planned to remove four trees that were obstructing sidewalk walkability and accessibility on SE 1st street and SE 1st Ave. Community comment at the meeting pushed to preserve all four trees.

"I do think the sidewalks need to be much more accessible especially taking account the disabled community here in Gainesville," Josemmanuel Bazan, local chef said.

City commissioners say they want to preserve the local tree canopies while also fixing the sidewalks.

The decision came over two hours after colorful discussion.

One of the trees deemed too outgrown to preserve will be removed. The other three will undergo root cutbacks and preservation.

Commissioners say all sidewalks should be accessible after these adjustments. Commissioners also plan to speak with restraint owners along these streets about moving back their barriers.
