A year ago, vandals smashed a pillar at Veterans Memorial Park in Alachua County, a memorial to commemorate those who lost their lives in 9/11. A new senate bill hopes vandals will think twice about defacing war and police memorials in fear of harsher punishment.
Senate Bill 418, introduced in March, could convict those who deface a monument of a third-degree felony if it is approved.
"The fact that people would stoop so low to dishonor those that sacrifice for them and for our country, to me they should have been reprimanded in a very severe way," said veteran Bob Gasche.
