  • A new provision in the Americans with Disabilities Act requires pools that are open to the public to add the lifts. They were supposed to be installed by May, but the Justice Department has moved the deadline to January. While some pools continue to fight the order, this could be the last extension.
  • Fruit Ninja. Bejeweled. Plants vs. Zombies. These are all top-grossing apps through Apple's app store. Plenty of folks dream about creating the next mobile application smash hit. • Apple has been sending out electronic receipts for years. Nordstrom and Patagonia have also made the switch. And this summer, Gap Inc. launched e-receipts at more than 2,600 stores. The receipts, which are sent to customers' email inboxes, are convenient and eco-friendly. But the major plus for stores is branding.
  • Recently there's been a little more interest than usual in the Civil War, owing to the 150th anniversary of the historic event. Even so, fewer people are donning Union and Confederate gear and participating in historical reenactments. And as those who have been re-enacting for decades retire from the battlefields, many wonder who will take their place.
  • Studies show only about 40 percent of health care workers in the U.S. wash their hands as often as they should. So some hospitals are trying to monitor just how regularly their employees are washing up — by testing out new surveillance technologies.
  • Wire hangers have become more expensive since the government set import tariffs on cheaper hangers from China. Dry cleaning operators nationwide are asking customers to return their hangers to help keep costs down.
