A 22-year-old Gainesville woman was arrested Monday at UF Health Shands hospital after she purposefully knocked over a container of boiling water onto her boyfriend and 2-month-old son, police said.
Yva Monord told officers she boiled the water Saturday morning to clean bottles and pacifiers for her infant son, and brought the water container into a bedroom. She then became frustrated with her boyfriend for alleged infidelity, according to a Gainesville police report.
Monord intended on giving her boyfriend an “abrupt awakening,” the report said. She told police her boyfriend was covered with a blanket in bed, and she didn’t realize her infant son was also in the bed.
Her boyfriend suffered extensive burns to his right arm, upper torso, face and back. They will likely cause permanent disfigurement, the report said.
The baby suffered second-degree burns to his chest and left arm. The burns account for 5 percent of his total body surface area and may require skin grafting at a later time, the report said.
Monord was arrested at the hospital, where her boyfriend was being treated, and was charged with aggravated child abuse and aggravated battery. She was being held this morning at the Alachua County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
