Exclusive: Gator 1 Card mobile wallet integration in development

From the desk of Tech Tomorrow:

WUFT exclusively confirmed that UF is developing integration for Gator 1 Cards, the school's student ID system, with mobile wallets such as Apple Wallet and Google Wallet.

Apple included the University of Florida in a list of partners working on integration with the Apple Wallet app at Monday's WWDC press conference. Among others on the list were hotel franchises such as Walt Disney World and Hyatt; lock manufacturers such as Schlage and Yale; and other universities such as Penn State and Duke.

Upon questioning about inclusion in this list, UF Business Affairs exclusively confirmed to WUFT's Tech Tomorrow it is working on mobile wallet integration among other upgrades to the campus card system.

Though business affairs has not confirmed what specific features the system will support, other universities' mobile student IDs enable entry to private areas, payment on meal plans, and more.

In addition to student IDs, Apple is beginning to support employee badges, hotel room keys, home locks, and driver's licenses.

In fact, Florida Politics confirmed last year that the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is working on supporting Florida driver's licenses in the Apple Wallet app.

There is no word regarding a timeline for availability, but we have reached out to business affairs for additional comment beyond the initial confirmation.
