After Hurricane Matthew crossed the western half of Haiti last week, thousands of people died and many were left homeless. One local Gainesville school, Sidney Lanier, has strong ties to Haiti and hopes to bring relief supplies to the island country in December.

For several years, Sidney Lanier, an Alachua County public school for students with disabilities, has been working with an orphanage in Haiti. Sidney Lanier staff members have visited the orphanage and students from both schools have been able to video conference together.

Now, the schools is planning another trip to Haiti this December and is collecting relief supplies along with the University of Florida's Club Creole to bring much-needed supplies. Club Creole will be holding the donation drive throughout the week.
