How To Submit A Story For Publication To WUFT
You've reported a story of which you are proud.
Your instructor or professor has given you editing feedback, and you've made the story even better.
Now you want to get published.
If all of that is true, great. We're here to help. First, please answer the following in your pitch and submission email:
Who is your story's audience?
While WUFT is based at the University of Florida, its mission is not to cover campus happenings and student activities. We instead seek to listen to and inform our entire coverage area about the issues and events important to their lives. We reach 13 counties between Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa — including some 50 small cities and towns — with a total population of 1.3 million. Our priority coverage topics are public safety, economy, education, environment, government and politics, health and human stories of the underrepresented and underserved voices in our area.
If your story is mostly about a campus event or student effort, please instead consider contacting The Alligator.
For which platform is the story or project intended?
- WUFT.org
- WUFT-FM
- WUFT-TV
- Instagram photo story
- All of the above (we prefer whenever possible for storytelling to publish and air on all platforms).
OK, I understand that and am ready to submit. Now what?
Send to news (at) wuft (dot) org one email that includes:
- An attached Word document with your full and edited story, a suggested headline, photo captions and photo credits that clearly correspond to the intended photos.
- Attached photos that you either took yourself or obtained written permission from the photographer to use. Please include the photo credit, as noted above.
- Contact information for the reporter, their instructor and the story's sources.
- If there are accompanying multimedia elements (videos, graphics, audio, etc.), please ensure they're included and, if the file size is too large for an email attachment, made accessible via shared link to Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.
- Out of consideration to our digital team, include at least one suggested Facebook and Twitter post for help with social media promotion. We, too, want your story shared and seen as widely as possible. Please help us help you.
Due to the volume of submissions, we cannot reply to every query. You will be contacted if your story is being considered for publication.
What else should I know?
Please be mindful of these trickier parts of the publishing process:
- WUFT News reserves the right to edit, change or reject any submission that does not meet expectations or standards.
- All materials must be vetted by WUFT News managers before publishing/airing.
- Instructors and authors will be included on any and all corrections.
- If the content is to have a unique digital presentation, who will develop the website or story online? Collaboration with a WUFT manager in advance is essential to that project's success.
- Who will handle social promotion of the stories? Will there be a social media campaign outside of WUFT?
Thank you for considering WUFT News as your publishing outlet. We look forward to reviewing your submission(s).
