Police LGBT Liaison Team Helps Gainesville Residents Feel Safer

The Gainesville Police Department appointed a liaison team to the LGBT community to help make everyone feel safe and included after the Pulse Nightclub attack last year.

The team was made last July after the shooting and employs officers that personally identify with the LGBT community themselves.

GPD LGBT liaison team officer Gilberto Gonzalez said it helps people in the community to feel comfortable talking to an officer they have something in common with.

Gonzalez and the rest of the team want the entire community to know: they’re here to keep everyone safe.

“They’re not going to get any preference or any favoritism over a heterosexual citizen. They’re all citizens, they’re all going to get treated the same,” he mentioned.
