Waldo Community School gets new life: A work space for local startups and businesses.

The charter school which was aiming to open in Waldo in August 2019 has hit a serious setback recently, as the project director has determined there is little chance for the school to qualify for existing state grants.

On Thursday, Hawthorne Middle High School held a district rezoning workshop in case the school does not receive a passing grade and the students at Hawthorne have to go to another school starting in the 2018-2019 school year.

Residents and town officials presented possible uses for the empty Waldo Community School building, which closed after the 2014-2015 school year, to the Alachua County School Board Tuesday evening.

Books and Burgers, a literacy program run by the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Youth and Community Resource Unit is a local activity. Officers go to different elementary schools and parks to grill burgers and hot dogs, hand out books and spend time with kids and parents.

The Alachua County School Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to consolidate Waldo Community School with Shell Elementary School. The decision marks the end of a hard fought battle for Waldo to keep its school.
