The City of Gainesville has acquired an 87-acre parcel of land on the west boundary of the Flatwoods Conservation Area. City Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Program Coordinator Stefanie Nagid says the expansion will allow for more recreational opportunities, like nature trails and bird watching, and other avenues in the future.

She says purchasing one piece of land doesn't change too much, but the city has a list of land it is hoping to acquire. This tract was purchased with funding through "Wild Spaces Public Places", which Nagid says came at no current cost to area residents. She says because of that specific funding, any changes or improvements they make to the land must be consistent with keeping it as a nature park.
