The city of Gainesville will begin a new tradition this fall. The Commission approved the proposed United Downtown festival on Thursday, which will be hosted by United Way of North Central Florida. Fridays before home football games, Southeast 1st street will feature live music, kid’s play areas, and vendors selling food and beer. Commissioner Thomas Hawkins said there are concerns about ordinance changes required for beer sales, such as insurance and liquor licensing, however he believes the event could benefit the city.
