More than $500,000 worth of traffic-signal improvements will start on Monday at two busy Gainesville intersections.
The Florida Department of Transportation’s project will replace traffic signals, poles and pedestrian countdown signals on East University Avenue at its intersections with East 14th and East 15th streets, according to a news release from FDOT.
Additionally, the projects will replace the sidewalks and handicap-accessible ramps already there, and will upgrade traffic cameras and roadway sensors.
Commuters can expect lane closures around the affected intersections Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. However, which lanes will be closed and when will be announced on a week-to-week basis, FDOT spokesman Troy Roberts told WUFT.
"The lane closures are not a constant thing," he said. "They just depend on what road and intersection we're working on."
The weekly reports will be available through the FDOT website.
There will also be periodic detours and limited access to sidewalks, but surrounding businesses will remain open.
The improvements, being done by Florida Safety Contractors, are expected to be complete by this fall.
