Rep. Richard Nugent Announces His Retirement From Congress

In a statement today, U.S. Rep. Richard Nugent (R-District 11) announced he will not seek another congressional term.

Nugent represents a district that covers Citrus, Hernando, Lake, Marion and Sumter counties. Nugent was elected to Congress in 2010 after serving as Hernando County sheriff.

In his statement, Nugent cites the need to spend more time at home after serving five years in Washington, D.C.

"As I remarked to a colleague during one of my first months in Congress, ‘It feels like I’ve spent more time away from my wife in the last three weeks than I have in the last thirty years," he said.

"Sensing how unhappy I was about it, my colleague tried to assure me that it would get easier with time.  In reality, the opposite was true."
