Health Department facing more cuts

As the Alachua County Health Department continues to work towards financial stability, the biggest expense- personnel- is still facing some cuts. Interim Director Paul Myers says the new year comes with a round of lay-offs, although fewer than previous planned.

The Health Department found itself in financial problems late last year, and then-director Jean Munden was let go. Since then, Myers says the clinic has eliminated weekend hours and taken other steps to try and save money, while maintaining as many services as it can.

He says they will continue to look at what other areas can be cut to keep the department functioning on pace with the budget the state legislature has to offer.
