As fires continue to burn large areas across North Central Florida, Perry District Wildfire Mitigation Specialist Chelsea Parker says the state overall has seen more fires this year.
“It’s been pretty active especially compared to last year’s very inactive fire season. Last year, the whole state was very fortunate in having the pretty calm fire season and this year has definitely made up for the lack of activity,” she says.
She says the district has sent a number of firefighters to help in surrounding areas, including Trenton, because they have a lower fire threat than surrounding areas. She says heavier rain in Taylor, Dixie, Madison and Lafayette counties has helped lower the risk, but wildfire will continue to be a real threat in the near future.
