Elementary school hopes to inspire students with month-long reading program

Shell reading effort

Students at Shell Elementary School have heard the words to the book "Jason and Elihu" every day since April 10.

The book is read to students as part of the One Book, One School, One Community project. Principal Libby Hartwell said she hopes this month-long reading program will foster a love of reading.

Shelley Fraser Mickle, author of "Jason and Elihu," read a chapter to the school.

"I think that reading opened my own life when I was about in the fourth grade," she said. "I'm just really excited the kids at Shell Elementary have picked up my book."
