The deadline for School Choice is fast approaching.
Parents who want their children to attend school during the 2013-2014 school year outside their current zoned schools can still submit applications until Feb. 15.
Jackie Johnson, public information officer for Alachua County Public Schools, said parents can determine if there's a school that will serve their child's need better than the school they're currently zoned for.
"It's just another window of opportunity for parents and students to take advantage of," Johnson said.
Students are assigned to their local public schools based on their parent or parents' zip code.
Three criteria are considered before admission, according to Johnson:
- Whether an applicant has siblings currently at the requested school.
- If he or she previously attended the school.
- His or her socioeconomic status.
Students who are accepted with controlled school choice or zoning exemptions will not receive transportation to their requested school.
The program is at most Alachua County schools, but the number of students at each school determines if a school can participate in the program, she said.
