Agriculture agents are working to assess exactly what a hard freeze and persistent cold weather will mean to crops currently growing. Alachua County Extension Agent Barton Wilder says strawberries and citrus would be most affected at farms if freeze protection steps were not effective.

He says these farmers have dealt with persistent cold before, so they were prepared for the sudden change in temperature.

Nursery growers are also working to protect plants that have large leaves which can be vulnerable to freezing temperatures. Wilder says the best protection for everything growing right now is proper nutrition and health for plants and barriers to protect crops against wind wherever possible.
