Drought conditions continue to fuel wildfires across the state

Tomorrow is the first official day of summer and wildland firefighters are praying for afternoon summer showers. As of this morning, there are 440 active wildfires burning in the state with 53 burning more than one-hundred acres. Waccasassa Forestry District Wildfire Mitigation Specialist, Ludie Bond says a long, slow rain is really what the wildfires need for complete containment. She says the low levels of humidity are a challenge for current drought conditions. She adds this leads to dry swamps that then become fuel for the wildfires.
