A pedestrian accident occurred close to the University of Florida's campus. It left sophomore Calhoun Wolverton in a medically induced coma.
Wolverton's coworker at UF Student Recreation and Fitness Center Justin Glasser found out about the accident while at work.
"I guess I was honestly in shock first because that is just terrible news," he said.
Wolverton is recovering from facial reconstruction surgery from earlier this week. Wolverton was crossing 13th Street when he was hit by a car. The City of Gainesville received multiple calls regarding actions to prevent accidents.
A traffic safety for UF students petition started and now has 22,500 signatures, which is close to the 25,000 signature goal. It asks signers to call on the Gainesville police department and the city to demand change.
