Car-Fit Class Helps Gainesville Elders with Driving Safety

Senior drivers now have tools and knowledge to stay safe on the road.

AARP is traveling the country to provide classes to senior drivers to ensure that they are using positioning controls and devices properly. AARP teamed-up with University of Florida occupational therapy students to conduct the class for locals at the senior recreation center parking lot in Gainesville.

The students check 11 different things such as how far way the individual is from the steering wheel. The class also provides tools to facilitate driving such as a swivel seat, which makes it easier for people with hip problems to get out of the car.

Dorothy Cruse and her husband have been driving for more than 50 years, and she appreciates the help.

"We feel that we're pretty set already and how we fit our car but there's always something new to learn," Cruse said.
