Group Expanding Investigation into GRU Fee Tax

The Seniors vs. Crime office is now looking into taxes on gas and water surcharges collected by Gainesville Regional Utilities. The group was previously only investigating a complaint about a tax on electric customer charges collected by GRU.

According to SVC office manager John Caravella, an advisory opinion from Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi in 2013 is his basis for further inquiry. The opinion was issued regarding a similar case in Leesburg.

Seniors Versus Crime sent a letter to GRU attorney Shayla McNeill and to Gainesville Mayor Ed Braddy today asking them to consider refunding customers $10.4 million in potentially improperly collected taxes.
